The Spotlight Effect
Do you feel everyone is constantly judging you? Constantly looking at everything you do – how you walk, what you wear, the way you talk? This is called The Spotlight Effect For instance, imagine you're at school and you spill a bit of coffee on your shirt. You might feel like everyone is noticing and thinking about your stain. In reality, most people probably don't notice it, or if they do, they quickly forget about it. We often overestimate how much attention others pay to our flaws or mistakes because we are so focused on them ourselves. This effect happens because we are the center of our own world, so we naturally assume we are as important to others as we are to ourselves. In truth, everyone else is also the center of their own world and likely not paying as much attention to us as we think. Understanding the spotlight effect can help reduce anxiety and self-consciousness in social situations, as it reminds us that people are generally less observant and judgmental of our actions than we might fear. The truth is, everyone is the centre of their own world and everyone’s spotlight is focussed on themselves. Knowing this, should make things easier.
